'When you play th game of thrones, you win or you die". That statement from Cersei Lannister is the most accurate way to sum up being a house of power in Westeros. There are few choices for your house in this world: Defeat the other houses, submit to the other houses, or be destroyed by the other houses. A gateway option is to ally yourself with other houses, often smaller ones who rely on protection of the more powerful houses. This option, however, leads directly to the previous choices and can have deadly consequences.
One house that knows all too well about the repercussions of placing trust in the wrong hands is House Stark of Winterfell. Not only do they lose the Patriarchal figure and lord in Eddard Stark by him placing his trust in the wrong allies at the beginning, their entire house is nearly brought to extinction multiple times for the same reasons.
