Game Of Thrones: Ranking EVERY Major Death Worst To Best

3. Hodor

Game Of Thrones Ned Stark
HBO

Death: Killed by White Walkers while holding a door to a tunnel and buying Bran and Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick) time.

The Hodor twist from season six - that Bran accidentally warged into Hodor and turned him into the simple-minded character we know and that 'Hodor' is a slurring-together of the words "Hold the door", therefore foreshadowing his death - is one of the greatest and smarted twists in TV history.

It is a completely shocking, gut-wrenching moment that left viewers staring open-mouthed at the screen... and sobbing. A lot.

In hindsight, it feels like a slight missed opportunity since Bran's powers didn't really go anywhere, but Hodor's death scene itself is still an emotionally devastating, ingeniously done sequence that you'll never, ever forget.

Every time we'd heard him say "Hodor" it had actually been a reminder of his impending doom and as much as we wanted the kind, well-loved Hodor to stay alive, thanks to Bran's mistake his death was completely inevitable. This makes re-watching any scene with Hodor a deeply upsetting experience.

Game of Thrones has traumatised us all many times, but this was definitely one of the hardest occasions to deal with. Still, it's completely brilliant storytelling nonetheless.
