Cast your mind back to the season that started the long and bloody struggle for the Iron Throne.

For the average television viewer, Game of Thrones was impossible to ignore when it first aired back in 2011. Whilst titans of the fantasy genre such as Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings had their dark moments, Game of Thrones presented a world abundant with violence, sex, and political intrigue.

In contrast to later seasons, the first had a tighter, less ambitious plot. Yet this was not a disadvantage. The main story arc revolved around Eddard Stark’s investigation into the death of Jon Arryn, which in turn raised questions about the legitimacy of King Robert’s children. In this sense, the first season had a detective quality to it that made it unique.

As for the characters, observing the many individuals at the start of the show knowing where they end up in the final season (for those who made it that far) makes the first season highly rewatchable.

Though the production values may not hold up against later seasons, in terms of character, plot, and faithfulness to the source material, these first ten episodes rank amongst the best.
