You knew it was coming, Sansa knew it was coming, Reek… okay, maybe he didn’t expect this exactly but, let’s face it, nothing surprises that guy anymore.

Up ‘til now Game Of Thrones has been critic catnip, receiving almost universal praise every time a new episode airs. Not this time. The season’s low point before the last episode aired was a pathetic 96% Rotten Tomatoes score for its second instalment. The current score for Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken? 59%.

Sansa Stark’s rather unromantic wedding night has ignited a fiery debate among the show’s fans, with some calling this the final straw and claiming they’re now officially done with Game Of Thrones (unlikely but not inconceivable). Many a critic railed against rape being used as a plot device yet again, with pop culture site The Mary Sue electing to end its promotion of the show in light of the latest scandal.

So it was that a season that’s been subjected to criticism in some circles for being somewhat lacking in incident threw in an incident that’s been roundly criticised for what it’s done to one of its subjects. Whatever your feelings about the latest shock incident in a show practically defined by them, the only real shock would be a significant drop-off in viewing figures.
