Game Of Thrones Season 8: 7 Clues From Episode 5's Trailer

6. Dany's Mental State And Isolation Reaffirmed

Dany Dragonstone Throne
HBO

The only shots we see of Dany in this trailer pitch her as an isolated, moody Queen, bathed in darkness and contemplating. We only ever seen her in deep shadow, she never talks, she's never seen in battle... It's all very consciously done to make her feel like a volatile loose cannon.

The trailer wants us to think of her as increasingly isolated and struggling with the aftermath of Rhaegal and Missandei's deaths. We're supposed to think of her as heading towards being the Mad Queen and even the image of her sitting on her family thrown is designed to subconsciously trigger us into thinking about her destiny to relive the sins of her father.

Expect her episode to be at least partly defined by her struggle to counter that destiny and live her own. Whether she's successful or not remains to be seen.

Interestingly, we don't get to see Varys before her at her Dragonstone throne - or anywhere else in the brief trailer. Considering he was one of her key advisors even before Missandei and Jorah were removed, his absence has got to be a reason for concern for Dany. Or so you'd think anyway.

Maybe expect the Spider to spend a lot of time in the background weaving his webs.
