Game Of Thrones Season 8: 8 Ups And 1 Down From 'A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms'
4. Jaime And Brienne
Jaime and Brienne are one of, if not the best character pairing in the entire series. Together, they represent so much of what makes Game of Thrones brilliant: she the honourable woman who is extremely gifted with a sword in hand, yet gets spurned for her looks and her gender; he the Kingslayer who should be the most celebrated knight in the Seven Kingdoms, and loyal to a family that doesn't deserve him. Through one another, they've come to see the world a little differently, and learn more about themselves too.
That may or may not ever lead to a romantic display of affection on screen - it's quite clear they have feelings for each other in some way - but what we get here is even better. Jaime, an anointed Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, makes Brienne a Knight too. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gwendoline Christie play the moment to perfection: it's sweet, but just restrained enough. It sweeps you up in just how moving it is, and if you didn't tear up you're a liar or made of stone.
It's a worthy payoff for their entire journey, but even just in the context of this episode too, which at times is like watching the Jaime Lannister show. The opening quarter, in particular, is all about him, and he helps carry it through until near the end, reminding us all of why he's one of the richest, most layered and complex characters on TV.
