Game Of Thrones Season 8 Finale: 10 Ups And 3 Downs From 'The Iron Throne'

9. The Iron Throne Is Destroyed

Yes Drogon, burn that motherf**ker down. There are numerous parallels to be drawn between A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, which is one of the biggest influences on George R.R. Martin's story. There are plenty in this finale alone, but perhaps none more so than the Iron Throne serving as this tale's version of the One Ring.

The Iron Throne, like the One Ring, is a symbol of power that many seek to hold, but more importantly, its one whose power corrupts. Little good can come of seeking that power, and that's why it had to end up being destroyed.

Both are destroyed in the fires that forged them: instead of fires Mount Doom, we get the fiery breath of Drogon, who burns the Throne down after discovering his mother has died. It's not only a stunning visual as we see the most uncomfortable seat in the world on fire, but a condemnation of what it represents, and of how it, more than Tyrion, Jon, or any other individual, led to Daenerys' death, as it did so many before her.
