Game Of Thrones: 10 Small Moments That Will Come Back In Big Ways

4. The Blackfish Escapes

For a character who has so far only appeared in a handful of episodes and delivered a handful of lines, Brynden Tully has made quite the impression. Called "Blackfish" as the odd man out of House Tully, Ser Brynden is the warrior uncle of Catelyn, Lysa, and Edmure. He debuted in the third episode of Season 3 following the death of Lord Hoster Tully. At first seeming just another Tully bannerman, the Blackfish distinguished himself by successfully alighting his elder brother's floating funeral pyre with a single flaming arrow after Edmure failed to hit the target thrice, thus satisfying Tully funeral customs rather than sending Hoster's corpse down the river intact. Archery superiority aside, the Blackfish soon proved far more strategic and savvy than the new lord of Riverrun and became an invaluable member of Robb's inner circle. Although he did accompany the Northern forces to the Twins, he avoided the carnage of the Red Wedding when he chose a very opportune time to relieve himself. The Blackfish escaped. Why He Matters: Although playing a less role in the show than in the books, Brynden's escape was sufficiently notable in-universe that the self-congratulatory Roose Bolton and Walder Frey regarded it as one of the few failures of their Red Wedding. With the Tullys nearly as ruined as the Starks, he is a dangerous outlier fueled by loyalty to his family and with nothing left to lose. Sure, he's not as filled with youthful vim and vigor as one might hope of a savior, but the Blackfish's escape could enact some serious hurt on the perpetrators of the Red Wedding and hasten the returns of the surviving Starks to their rightful places in Westeros.
