5. Qhorin Halfhand Gets Himself Killed By Jon Snow
Because he hesitates to execute Ygritte, Jon Snow is eventually cut off from the rest of his party. This results in his capture by the wildlings, and, as it turns out, Qhorin Halfhand's. Realising that the only way to save the young Night's Watchman's life is to sacrifice his own, the Halfhand disarms one of his captors and attacks Jon with the sword. Ygritte arms him too and the two men face off in a battle to the death. Whether Qhorin held back or not is debatable - it's possible that the wildlings would be able to tell, given his notoriety for being a total badass - but in any case, Jon kills him and in doing so seems to earn the wildlings' trust. After a brief, stunned silence, the Lord of Bones commands that the body be burned, telling Jon: "You don't want this one coming back for you." A slightly complicated entry, in that there are two possible acts of baddasery: either Qhorin Halfhand sacrificed his life to save Jon Snow, or Jon Snow killed Qhorin Halfhand in mortal combat. Maybe it's both - you decide.
