Game Of Thrones: 5 Winners And 5 Losers In 'Mockingbird'

2. Prince Oberyn

Oberyn1 Game Of Thrones1

Aside from the glorious way in which he recalls the first time he met a baby Tyrion, Prince Oberyn is a winner for two reasons: firstly, because he saves our favourite character from certain death by offering to be his champion and fight in his place, and secondly, because he will finally get a shot at that long awaited justice he has been seeking.

After both Jaime and Bronn passed on the opportunity to represent Tyrion in his trial by combat, it was looking ever likely that the unlucky Lannister was going to have to face his sister€™s champion, Ser Gregor Clegane, himself. Even in the most benign Disney fairytale, this contest has only one winner, and it isn€™t the hero. With Tyrion all but resigned to his fate, Prince Oberyn offers him one final vestige of hope, and volunteers to fight in his place against the Mountain.

Prince Oberyn€™s offer isn€™t entirely selfless though, which brings us to our second reason: justice for Elia. Prince Oberyn has come to the capital seeking justice against the Lannisters and those who acted on their behalf during the sack of King€™s Landing, resulting in the rape and murder of his beloved sister Elia and her baby children. The man responsible for these crimes is Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain, and as Tyrion€™s champion, Prince Oberyn will finally have the opportunity he has been looking for to claim justice against his foe. Because Lord Tywin denied ever giving the order for Clegane to murder Elia, there is no proof that Prince Oberyn€™s accusations are warranted. Therefore, short of a confession, the Mountain isn€™t going to he convicted of anything, certainly not by the crown. With both men participating as champions in the trial by combat, Prince Oberyn has a legal loophole through which he can kill Ser Gregor. Though the trial will not represent the Mountain€™s own crimes, the potential outcome will be the same, at least in the eyes of Prince Oberyn.
