Game Of Thrones: 7 Things We Learned From "The Lion And The Rose"

3. The Lord Of Light Is Still Going Strong In Stannis€™ Kingdom

If you€™re still not worshipping the Lord of Light in Stannis Baratheon€™s kingdom, you€™ve essentially signed your death sentence. As we opened up on Dragonstone, Stannis, his wife Selyse, Melisandre and many others are witnessing several people being burned at the stake - including Stannis€™ bannerman (and Selyse€™s brother) Ser Axell Florent. Because they did not give up their old gods, these sinners are being offered to the Lord of Light as a tribute. Davos, who is still disgusted by Melisandre and these rituals, forces himself to listen politely as Selyse expresses her excitement about the ceremony. After the bonfires, Stannis, Selyse and Melisandre have dinner. After learning that Stannis makes a delightful course of grilled seagull, Selyse states that the Lord of Light is punishing their daughter Shireen with physical disfigurement because she€™s €œsullen, stubborn and sinful.€ Stannis forbids Selyse from physically harming Shireen anymore, but agrees to have Melisandre speak with her. Shireen questions the red priestess on the legitimacy of the Lord of Light, and Melisandre insists that what the princess has read about the Seven Gods are all lies. There are only two gods: one of light and The Great Other, and there is only one hell: €œThe one we live in now.€ It€™s interesting to see that while most of the people of Dragonstone have taken to Melisandre€™s religion, a child is one of the few people who questions her. As we€™ve seen, Melisandre and the other priests of the Lord of Light do have supernatural abilities, but that doesn€™t mean that theirs is the only legitimate religion. Shireen is wise to question Melisandre, and time will tell if the princess starts drinking the Kool-Aid as well. As for Stannis, when we left him in season 3, he told Davos that they needed to lead troops to the Wall to assist Jon Snow against the White Walkers. They must still be planning for this journey, and will likely embark on it in the coming episodes.
