Game Of Thrones: Season 4 Death Watch (Breaker Of Chains)

5. Charles Dance Versus...

Did anyone manage to gain the upper hand of Tywin Lannister this week? First we had the mentoring of king-in-waiting Tommen. It is clear that Tywin saw Joffrey as weak, making us wonder if he was behind the poisoning, allowing him to 'guide' a king that was far more malleable. Certainly the way he refers to Joffrey, while standing over his dead body in the sept, is lacking any sense of respect or grief for his dead grandson. But it is with Cersei where he wins. By taking Tommen under his wing and leading him away, she loses her last son to her father ; just watch the despair on her face as they leave. We also get plenty of barbed wit and banter between Oberyn Tyrell vs Tywin as they head into round two, when the Hand Of The King interrupts the prince of Dorne's orgy. "I'm sorry about your grandson." Oberyn notes. "I don't believe the son is guilty of the crimes of his father, or grandfather." He's even more direct when the conversation of what happened to his sister raises its head again. "My sister was raped and killed by the Mountain, the Mountain that follows your orders. Of course I blame you." Of course, nothing fazes Tywin. "Men at war commit all sorts of crimes without their superiors knowledge". In fact, he seems to win the war between them, offering up a chance for Oberyn to meet the Mountain in exchange for becoming a judge at Tyrion's trial. It's a ploy that seems to work and for now, Tywin is victorious once more.
