Gotham: 10 BEST Changes To The Comics

5. Hugo Strange And Arkham Asylum

Gotham Season 5
Fox

Perhaps one of the most threatening mad scientists in Batman's rogues gallery - which is saying a lot when considering how many of them are mad scientists - the nefarious Hugo Strange debuted in the second season as the head psychiatrist of Arkham Asylum. Hugo Strange's role in Gotham isn't as drastically changed from the comics as others, and his goals are instead shifted towards different subjects.

While in the comics Strange creates a group of monster men to do his bidding and take down Batman, Gotham makes Strange's vendetta that bit more personable. In the series, Strange uses his psychiatrist occupation as a front for developing powerful meta-humans out of the criminally insane, as well as the recently deceased. These experiments produce the creation of Mr Freeze and Firefly in addition to the resurrection of Fish Mooney and Theo Galavan; the latter is subsequently convinced that he is the Angel of Death, Azrael.

The revelation that Hugo Strange is being funded by The Court of Owls and was once a colleague of Thomas Wayne emotionally intertwines himself with Bruce Wayne's existence. Strange's involvement in Bruce's past and the steps he has taken to influence his career as Batman greatly consolidates his place in the Batman mythos in ways that his comic book counterpart couldn't.
