10. Ditch The Caricatures, Give Us Some Characters
Commissioner Jim Gordon, Lieutenant Harvey Bullock, Alfred Pennyworth, Oswald Cobblepot, Edward Nygma, Selina Kyle, Bruce freakin Wayne. Comic book characters dont get much more well known than this lot; one would think, all things considered, that a television show focused squarely on their early days, well before the Caped Crusader entered into the picture, would more or less write itself, right? Alas, apparently not. Despite having access to thousands of terrific stories from across all manner of comic, film, television, novel, and even video game from which to draw inspiration, Heller and company have thus far chosen to ignore any outside material, favoring instead to craft their own original stories, with their own takes on these classic characters. Which would be fine, if their takes were actually, you know, interesting or distinctive or even the least bit three-dimensional. The characters lack of depth is doubly frustrating for Batman fans, who over the course of the last decade or two have been witness across mediums to some truly seminal depictions. We know that its possible for these characters to be done right; sadly, all that Gotham has thus far shown is that its just as possible for them to be done wrong, as well.
