Thomas and Martha Wayne may be the most important characters in the whole Batman canon. Without their love, their dedication to Gothams future, and unfortunately, their untimely deaths, there would never have been a Batman. The trailer's first notable event sees the Mayor mourning the Wayne Family and announcing to the gathered press a tougher stand against criminals. We also witness the act itself and Bruces mourning (possibly with some over-acting, but it may come across better on TV than it does in the trailer). Heres something weve never seen in Batman before. Yes, weve seen the various renditions of their deaths in Tim Burton and Christopher Nolans Batman series, but weve never properly seen the effect it has on Gotham and its citizens. There will be public mourning and outcry, also a demand for justice. Their deaths set a series of events in motion, and itll be interesting to see how characters - main and supporting - react. Thomas and Martha Wayne were the last stand against Gotham descending into chaos. Their charity work was vital in improving the lives of those less fortunate (as noted in Nolans universe, Thomas nearly bankrupted his company to fund his efforts to save the city). Their murder is the first step in the city free falling into the darkness; a deep abyss devoid of all hope. That is going to be exciting to watch.
