Gotham: 17 Easter Eggs & References You Must See

12. Edward Nygma, Speaks In Riddles

We doubt this one was particularly difficult to figure out, but it was so on the nose perhaps you hadn't considered the makers of Gotham were serious. Plus it's a little worrying how many members of Batman's future rogues gallery have connections to the police department. We're starting to believe all these rumours about corruption being rife, if we're honest. He only pops up for a brief scene but he certainly makes his presence known, as the GCPD's forensics guy appears to tell Bullock and Gordon about the origin of the bullet that killed the Waynes. Except he tries to tell them in the form of a riddle, something which Bullock is already sick of hearing. Yes, Edward Nygma is the Riddler. Or at least it will be when he grows up a bit, starts wearing a green leotard, dyes his hair ginger and begins to resemble Jim Carrey a little more. Look, it's even in his name, clear as day: E Nygma. Enigma. So stupid. But, hey, that's comic books - they rarely deal in subtlety. And when they do, it usually flies over people's heads. Which Edward's riddles are unlikely to do, as the one he quizzes Gordon with when asked if there's any more info is pretty easily solved by the rookie detective, followed up by Harvey advising Nygma that he needs professional help. Ohoho, irony!
