The last time Warner Bros. tried a small screen superhero prequel, we all ended up waiting over a decade for Tom Welling to not bother wearing the Superman costume in the Smallville finale. That frustrating wait is sort of the point with Gotham though, as showrunner Bruno Heller has made it clear that the series ends the second Bruce Wayne dons the cape and cowl as Batman. As Gotham's Bruce is still a child, that's obviously a long way off. So, instead of focusing solely on the youngster's transformation into a Caped Crusader, the series puts the spotlight on the man who will one day be his greatest ally; Detective Jim Gordon. This is no simple police procedural though, with the early days of the men and women who will one day make up The Dark Knight's rogues gallery are also explored. As a result of all these different elements, Gotham is a busy show, and that could be why it's so far been met with something of a mixed response. At the very least, it can be said it isn't the critical darling that The Walking Dead is or the fanboy favourite The Flash has become, and instead sits somewhere in the middle. Gotham has plenty of good points to be fair, but there are still a number of relatively easy fixes that the series needs to undergo as it enters its second season if it hopes to stay on the air long enough to get to the point where billionaire Bruce Wayne decides to become The Batman. If Season Three is going to happen, it's essential that these points are addressed and fixed over the next year...
