Gotham Season 5 Review: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Ace Chemicals'

Downs...

1. Jervis Tetch Is Neglected

On the whole, Ace Chemicals is pretty damn close to perfect - so much so, that it's near impossible to find anything the matter with it. However, there is one problem - although its not confined to this instalment and more of a problem with the series as a whole - and that's the dismissal of Jervis Tetch as a legitimate antagonist.

Gotham has never shied away from putting its own spin on things, and one of its greatest accomplishments in this area was their unhinged iteration of The Mad Hatter. The character terrorised the citizens of the eponymous city during the third season - which remains one of the series' strongest to date - and Benedict Samuel was brilliant in his portrayal of the rhyming maniac.

After Tetch's arc was wrapped up, however, it became apparent that the writers were unsure of what to do with him, and as a result, he's become an errand boy for both Jerome and Jeremiah. He's only really brought out of the woodwork when the narrative requires someone to get hypnotised - which is unfortunately the case in Ace Chemicals.

It's truly a waste of The Mad Hatter, as this version of the character had all the potential to be a genuine threat.
