Hannibal was one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises of 2013. The show had a lot to live up to, thanks in no small part to the memorable and iconic performance Anthony Hopkins gave in Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Red Dragon. Luckily for us, Mads Mikkelsen was up for the challenge and delivered an impressive, fresh take on the character that, dare I say it, was better than Hopkins'. We've seen the titular serial killer/cannibal on screen multiple times through the eyes of various directors, in both good films and bad. The great thing about the show, and what makes it stand out above the rest of the series, is its exploration into the psyche surrounding not only Hannibal himself, but those around him; including Red Dragon's Will Graham (played fantastically by Hugh Dancy). The Will/Hannibal relationship, and how it evolved (and eventually crumbled) over the course of the first season, was fascinating and heartbreaking, and it looks to be moving into even darker directions in season 2. NBC released our first glimpse at the new season early Sunday, which you can watch here: Words don't seem to do the promo justice; but there are so many tantalizing details here that it's impossible to resist. The promo is, fittingly, only an appetizer; we've still got a few more excruciating weeks to go before the main course. The show's unique and striking visual style is clearly still intact, and the stakes are significantly higher this season than last.
