HBO's Watchmen: 10 Big Questions We Need Answers To
1. How Heavy Handed Will The Political Commentary Be?
This could be the big question that defines how well Watchmen will do. It’ll be one of those things a little hard to put your finger on, like the slight but noticeable decline in quality with Game Of Thrones’ most recent season.
Political commentary was a huge theme in Moore’s original graphic novel, with the swirling climate of the Cold War surrounding it. Back then, it might have been hard for anyone to imagine an era where politics received even more exposure, or that the world’s political leaders would be bigger caricatures than the likes of Ronald Reagan. But here we are.
With Trump in the White House, Brexit looming, openly fascist Bolsonaro winning Brazil’s Presidency, and Putin pulling the world’s strings (not to mention the ever-present threat of North Korea), it’s fair to say politics has gotten even bigger.
In taking on Watchmen right now, it almost goes without saying that there’ll be some political commentary involved. But with the characters in real-world politics so large, if the show tries to match it, it could quickly descend into cartoonishness. However, without matching it, there’s not much relevance to be found.
