From: The Last Temptation of Homer (Season 5, Episode 9) In one of the biggest developments of Homer's character (at least for one episode), Homer gets a new female co-worker at the nuclear power plant - and is instantly attracted to her. As circumstances keep throwing them together, Homer has to choose between his loyalty to his wife or his extra-marital urges. While an episode in which Homer nearly has an affair away from Marge could plainly cast Homer in the wrong, we are on Homer's side as he desperately tries to curtail his feelings. But it proves hard; Mindy herself, brilliantly played by Michelle Pfeiffer, is an exact female version of Homer; doughnut-loving and beer-drinking, she's even prone to saying 'mmm...' while drooling. However, Homer shows his worth as a husband when he says no to Mindy's advances and takes Marge on a vacation away. By making Homer face one of the toughest, most personal dilemmas ever on the show, and in doing so, reinforcing the relationship at The Simpsons' heart, this may be Homer's last temptation but is one of his best moments.
11. Talking Heads
From: Various This next entry on our list is more of a collection of great moments than any individual one. A common trick to make the workload lighter on the animators in earlier seasons was to add a sequence where Homer would consult his brain on what to do or say next, often resulting in side-splitting scenes. Here's one of the best: Homer: (reading) No matter what you tell your child to do, he will always do the opposite. Huh? His brain: Don't you get it!? You gotta use reverse psychology! Homer: Well, that sounds too complicated. His brain: Okay, don't use reverse psychology. Homer: All right, I will! In later seasons, this developed into something more visual as we get to see just what goes on in Homer's head: usually something inane, such as the chattering monkey above, which Homer thinks about when Marge talks to him in The Simpsons Movie. For giving us an insight into what happens underneath that thick, yellow cranium, the scenes where we either see or hear Homer's thoughts make for some of the funniest - and occasionally illuminating - in the show's history.
10. Homer Simpson, Astronaut
From: Deep Space Homer (Season 5, Episode 15) Of all the many wild and wonderful adventures that Homer has enjoyed over the years, venturing into space is surely the greatest. Going where no Simpson has gone before... Worrying about their failing popularity within the public, NASA decides to send an ordinary man into space and, surprise surprise, Homer is picked. The best bit of Homer's space odyssey is, indeed, a moment that parodies Stanley Kubrick's famous sci-fi film. Echoing the docking scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Homer opens a bag of potato chips which, due to the zero gravity, proceed to float around the ship - at risk of clogging important instruments. However, Homer is at hand to save the day and flies around the craft, gobbling them up. It's a classic scene in one of the most ambitious episodes of the series in scope and is a quintessential Homer moment. Homer Simpson, the first man to snack in space.
