House Of Cards: 10 Awesome Moments From Season 2

2. Rachel Kills Doug (Episode 13)

One of the more bizarre subplots this season was Doug Stamper's conflicted feelings about Rachel, the girl he sent into hiding as a result of the whole Peter Russo debacle. He has been a constant interrupting presence in her life ever since, forcing her to move multiple times, apparently for both her own and Frank's well-beings, though one can't help but think it's all about control as well. One of Doug's final big scenes has him admitting these feelings, which are a confusing mixture of paternal and romantic, before he picks Rachel up in his car. The scene has a sinister tone, with Rachel quickly becoming paranoid that Doug's driving her somewhere to kill her. She bolts out of the car at a red light, causing Stamper to give chase into the woods. She hits him over the head with a rock, to which he seems genuinely surprised and alarmed, but she doesn't let him speak another word, before she bashes him over the head a few more times and flees in his own car. We're left in the lurch for a few scenes before we cut back to the woods the morning after, and Stamper is clearly dead. Given that he's one of the more complex and likeable characters in the series, this is a real shame.
