House Of Cards: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

2. Season 2 (2014)

House Of Cards
Netflix

There was a huge amount of deserved buzz around the second season. Ahead of its airing, Netflix were still fairly new at the TV game given that they had only aired two further original dramas, but delivered once again.

Following Frank’s ascendance to the Vice Presidency in the first season, it was far too easy to predict that the second would culminate with him taking over the Oval Office. Nevertheless the ride was still a spectacular if occasionally bumpy one, as shocking moments that came to be a bit too commonplace in later seasons were still few and far between – nobody (apart from those well versed with the BBC original) could’ve foreseen Frank throwing Zoe under a train or believed their eyes when he and his wife opted to engage in a threesome with the head of their protection detail.

The core plot of the season threw up Raymond Tusk (Gerald McRaney) as a worthy opponent to Frank as they competed for Presidential influence. Garrett Walker’s (Michel Gill) blindness to both was almost laughable at times, but the series was always at its best when either of its leads were having to deal with somebody willing to get their hands dirty.

All in all season two was a solid follow up that left the growing fanbase ready for more, though the cracks were beginning to show in places (not dissimilar to other shows with hugely successful first seasons, such as Homeland).
