8. The Conways Aren't Overly Interesting

Continuing on from Season 4, the Conways - Will and Hannah, played by Joel Kinnaman and Dominique McElligott respectively - are the main opposition for the Underwoods, the de facto 'bad guys' you're wanting them to beat (even if they're probably far better people).

The election continues to play out, and does so in ways you might not expect, and that's one of the drawbacks of the season, because the Conways aren't really interesting enough to dominate so much of the show.

Will is a bit of a wet blanket, even if Kinnaman is a solid enough presence; there's just a blandness to the character, and attempts at giving him more colour, such as a part of his military history that he won't reveal or revisit, aren't as interesting as the show hopes they are. Hannah fares even worse, getting little to do other than be the stock supportive wife character.

With such outlandish political characters as their opponents, the Conways could be positioned as the representation of an idealistic candidate who would offer serious change, but that's not really explored, and you never really believe too much in Will Conway.
