The notion of a King who does not want to be King in Westeros is an intriguing new subplot; viewers are used to people who are quite literally willing to eat each other in order to get their hands on the Iron Throne. As such, Tom Glynn-Carney's depraved Aegon Targaryen presents a far more nuanced concept than the cartoonishly evil Joffrey or the cluelessly naive Tommen.

Make no mistake, Aegon is still plenty despicable. To date audiences have been introduced to a King whose pastimes include dismissing sexual assault on unsuspecting handmaidens as "harmless fun", fathering bastards who subsequently languish in the grime and squalor of Flea Bottom, and watching feral children rip chunks out of each other in some twisted form of gladiatorial bloodsport.

Aegon may not be Joffrey-levels of psychotic yet, but the prospect of such an unhinged lecher on the Iron Throne is a foreboding one. Will Otto and Alicent wield the new King as a Hightower puppet in the manner of Tommen or will Aegon's newly discovered power unleash a side of himself even more sinister than the one revealed to date? One shudders to think what that could look like based on Aegon's antics to date.

However, this is Westeros and inconceivably wicked villains are an indispensable asset of the universe that fans have grown to adore. As such, Glynn-Carney's Aegon presents a thrilling new outlet for the electrifying new show.
