How I Met Your Mother: 10 Worst Breakups

6. Robin And Don

Don was a turning point in the character development of Robin Sherbatzky.

Portrayed as fiercely independent, Robin was never one for romantic gestures or putting relationships before her career. In fact, her breakup with Ted in season two was a result of not wanting to settle down with a partner, ever.

Robin's views on romance make it all the more meaningful when, not only does she begin to date her co-worker Don, but moves in with him shortly thereafter. Along the way, she also cuts back on her time spent with Barney and Ted, telling them that her feelings for Don are real and she needs to do everything she can to give it a proper shot.

The ultimate test of Robin's new outlook comes when she is offered a network anchor role in Chicago. Shockingly, Robin turns it down in order to stay in New York with Don.

Unfortunately, Don's resolve to make things work isn't as strong as Robin's, as it's revealed he accepted the same role when it is offered to him. Seeing the devastation creep into Robin's face is unforgettable, and knowing how much she has changed throughout the relationship makes it that much more painful.

Furthermore, the damage is revealed to be long lasting, as the next season opens with Robin still in complete shambles over the breakup. Watching the deterioration of arguably the strongest character on the show made for uncomfortable viewing that the laugh track couldn't help.
