After season two took a step back from the main plot of How I Met Your Mother, season three saw Ted's quest to meet his future wife put front and centre with a number of teases throughout its run. We were treated to the first mention and sight of the iconic yellow umbrella, a near encounter on St Patrick's Day and a major red herring at the end of the season, which left many of us scratching our heads for months after.
At this point though, the showrunners had generated a good balance between Ted's story and the rest of the gang. We saw the next step of Lily and Marshall's journey as newly-weds and the first sparks of romance between Barney and Robin, following which we began to get an insight into more of Barney's deep-rooted insecurities as both a friend and a romantic partner. After the fun of the first two seasons, we're starting to see the gang grow up.
