How I Met Your Mother captured that once in a decade sitcom magic. There hadn’t really been anything like it since Friends debuted in the 90s.
It’s easy to forget that How I Met Your Mother aired its first episode all the way back in 2005, just one year after Friends left our screens and it essentially took the mantle of the show about young Manhattan based friends moving from young adulthood into their 30s in contemporary New York and occasionally sleeping together.
Friends and How I Met Your Mother had basically the same premise and it was easy to see the Joey Tribbiani inspirations in Barney Simpson and the Ross Geller inspired Ted Mosby.
