In every sitcom there are characters and story lines which are defined by relationships. Lily and Marshall are vital to the show, not just as an amazing example of what couples can be, but as the emotional rock and anchor for the other three members of their gang. Barney, Ted and Robin often rely on them for emotional support or to be kept grounded and humble to prevent making an ass of their selves.
But unfortunately they aren't always there to prevent often self made disasters happening to the three loud personalities in their group. But that's alright as we get many hilarious moments, scenarios and often very memorable quotes coming from them.
