4. A Cricket's Tale

Of all the characters in Sunny, few can claim to be as tragic as Matthew Mara, aka Rickety Cricket, as the man had a fall from grace to rival that of Lucifer himself. He was introduced in season two as a young, reputable, good-looking priest. Cut to ten seasons later, and Cricket is a homeless drug addict who showers in urinals. Not to mention half his face being horribly burnt.

This episode provided the proverbial prodigal son with a chance at redemption, as his father tracks him down and convinces him to come work for and eventually take over his company; where he meets the girl of his dreams in the process.

It was not to be, however, and this episode features Sunny at its cynical best (or worst). Long story short, the new job falls through and his new companion is revealed to be non-existent (so to speak). With his one last chance at returning to a semi-normal life gone, Cricket contently returns to being a repulsive street rat.

The episode's dark humor is relentless in how it portrays Cricket's last chance slipping through his fingers. As a remedy, there's something genuinely hysterical about the half-blind PCP addict turning out to be a parkour master. Lump all that together with incredibly clever foreshadowing and a plot that perfectly intertwines with those of certain other season twelve episodes, and you have an excellent entry to the season.
