It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes

4. Charlie's Mom Has Cancer (Season 8, Episode 6)

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Dee
FX

Charlie’s neglect of his mother Bonnie comes back to haunt him when she is diagnosed with lung cancer. The Gang use the church’s model for scamming to raise money for Bonnie, inviting churchgoers to attend a Beef & Beer & Jesus event at Paddy’s.

In a bald cap, and with special effect scars to externally represent the disease “devouring” her insides, Bonnie is given a graphic speech to read. It includes lines such as “any minute my lungs are going to sizzle, pop, and disintegrate into a liquid lung and organ gumbo soup”.

Bonnie eventually admits she hasn’t got cancer. She and Mrs. Mac were running a scam, inspired by Charlie’s Season One fake cancer scheme, to pay for the Virgin Mary statue that they accidently damaged.

The episode’s B-plot is just as dark. When Dee mocks Frank’s memory, he plots a long game revenge. After convincing Dee that her mother is still alive and has hidden “Frank’s money” in her empty grave, the Gang go digging. When they unearth a decayed corpse, Frank triumphantly reveals he was grifting them as revenge for their mockery.
