Locke & Key Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

1. All The Classic Horror References

What arguably transpires through from the source material to this TV show better than anything else is a clear love for the horror genre, as evidenced by the film's many amusing nods to both classic horror films and legends from the industry.

As irritating as Scot tends to be throughout the series, his team of nerdy pals is named the "Savini Squad" in honour of horror effects legend Tom Savini, who hilariously makes a cameo appearance himself in the second episode.

In the season finale, there are also cameos for Hill himself and the comic's illustrator Gabriel Rodríguez, while the Massachusetts town in which the Lockes reside has been renamed from the rather on-the-nose "Lovecraft" to "Matheson," in honour of I Am Legend author Richard Matheson.

Fans of The Evil Dead should also keep an eye out for a rather unsubtle yet deeply amusing homage to the iconic "tree rape" sequence from Sam Raimi's horror classic.
