12. "I ate the M in Mom." - Roger Sterling
In episode 1x07, Roger invites himself over to dinner at the Draper household, and in typical Roger fashion, drinks way too much and crosses way too many the lines. Ever the presumptuous cad, Roger helps Betty clean up in the kitchen while Don steps out to the garage to get more liquor. Having enjoyed a dessert topped with frosting that says "Mommy and Daddy," made specially by Betty and Don's daughter Sally, Betty mentions that Sally will be happy to hear they enjoyed the cake she helped make. Roger replies in a courageous, drunken slur, while getting all kinds of grabby, "Be sure to tell her that I ate the M in Mom." What follows is a ridiculously awkward representation of "invading someone's personal space." He touches her hips, talks really close to her, says that he can't believe she's had two babies and looks as good as she does. Betty, rather meekly, says, "Don't do that." It's small, it's weak, it's incredibly powerless. In the world of Mad Men season one, one of Betty's roles was to be the best and most beautiful homemaker on the block - her husband is Don Draper, creative director at Sterling Cooper, and she raises a handsome family, keeps out of trouble, and throws dinner parties when she least expects to do so. Roger, here, Don's boss, takes complete advantage of that subservient role. And in such a creepy way.
