Making A Murderer: 6 Developments In The Avery Case Since It Debuted

1. Steven Avery Files A Fresh Appeal Against His Conviction

Perhaps the most significant development since the show hit is Avery filing a fresh appeal against his conviction for Halbach€™s murder. Lodged at the appeals court in Maddison, the document states that the authorities used an improper warrant during their investigation, and a juror assigned to his court hearing had it in for him, among other allegations. Avery describes the search conducted on his property as €œthe fruit of the poisonous tree€ and claims that a juror steered other members of the jury towards a guilty verdict through €œdirect or indirect influence€. The appeal, which contains numerous spelling and grammatical errors, bears Avery€™s signature, but new lawyer Zellner€™s name did not appear. Kratz has already chimed in on Avery's latest appeal, telling ABC News that the only new information it contains is the part about the biased jury.
€œThe issue regarding the jury is new information, but it doesn€™t rise to the level of jury tampering or setting aside a verdict. I€™m disappointed that Mr. Avery€™s appellate lawyers are allowing him to continue to file pleadings with the court on his own. That€™s what lawyers are hired to do.€
