Mandalorian Season 2 Theory: How And WHY Boba Fett Returns

Star Wars' most famous bounty hunter has come back from the dead.

After being teased in the fifth episode of The Mandalorian's first season, it looks as though Boba Fett is finally returning from the dead.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Temuera Morrison (who played Boba's father Jango in Attack of the Clones) will have a "small role" in The Mandalorian Season 2 as Boba Fett, who first captured fans' imaginations in 1980's The Empire Strikes Back before suffering a somewhat anticlimactic demise in Return of the Jedi, where a blind Han Solo knocked him into the Sarlacc Pit. Boba had previously made it out of the Sarlacc in Star Wars' now defunct 'Legends' continuity, while hints that he survived the encounter in the new canon have also appeared once or twice.

Jordan Maison of Cinelinx also chimed into the story, teasing that Morrison could be playing more than just Boba in the show's second season, which raises all sorts of interesting implications.

Morrison returning to play Boba naturally brings with it a bunch of questions. The first and potentially most mundane one is how did Fett escape the Sarlacc? The second (and the more exciting query), is why - why is Boba on Din Djarin's trail, and if Morrison is really set to play multiple characters in the show, could that mean that clones will have a big part to play?

It was with these questions in mind that myself and WhatCulture Gaming Editor Scott Tailford sat down to discuss Boba's resurrection, and what it could mean for Mando and co. in the show's second season...

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
