9. Game Of Death

When Madame Gao challenges Danny Rand to a tournament she's following on from the plot of The Immortal Iron Fist comic, in which Danny is challenged to compete in the tournament of the Seven Champions (a means to choose which of the Heavenly Cities deserves to be considered the top of the hierarchy).

In that tournament, the seven Immortal Weapons - one for each city - come together to fight for supremacy, and while there are only three stages to Danny's tournament in the show, it's a nice reference point.

Even better for martial arts fans, the way the battles are set up, throughout a building with different "levels" is irresistibly reminiscent of Bruce Lee's seminal film Game Of Death. And as an added nod, Gao does refer to it as a Tournament Of Death. Incidentally, the building where the Tournament has a sign outside it reading "Wai-Go Industries" - which is a company from the comics used as a false front by Hydra to get to K'Un-Lun.
