It's possibly not entirely intentional, but the idea of a character returning from the dead and leaving something of themself on the other side comes straight out of Stephen King's Pet Sematary (which will never not be spelled horrifically wrong).

In that book (and film), the ancient burial ground that doubles as the pet cemetery and allows victims to be brought back to life but turns them evil, and that's pretty much the same rule that governs what happens to Harold Meacham's returns from death as a monster. It also foreshadows the fact that Elektra is going to be a full villain when she eventually returns, having been resurrected by the Hand at the end of the second season of Daredevil.

It's also a similar idea to the one underpinning the mastery of death in Game Of Thrones, for another Finn Jones link.
