Marvel's Jessica Jones Season 2 Review: 6 Ups And 4 Downs
1. Krysten Ritter's Stunning Performance
Much more than before, Krysten Ritter is leaned on to carry this show, and her performance is the biggest single reason that Season 2 succeeds.
She was challenged in Season 1, but her performance across these 13 episodes asks even more of her, and yet she's up to the task on every occasion, whether it's being the most badass person on the show or having to go back to a childlike state of vulnerability as she finds her mother.
It's a quite beautiful and devastating psychological character study, which incorporates grief, loss, PTSD, abuse, anger, humour, violence, alcoholism, self-loathing, and more, and Ritter manages to deftly balance every single element of the character while being constantly charismatic. The way she finds a new kind of bravery in the closing moments is perhaps the toughest test of all for the character, and it's a much quieter, more thoughtful moment for Ritter to play, and she lands it perfectly.
It's one of the best superhero performances we've seen on TV - but also transcends that, as its a simply great performance regardless of genre, and a rare one at that - and above all else the reason this show is worth watching.
