Luke and Claire are having a nice stroll, when we suddenly find a gunman with his sights trained on Luke.

There's just the briefest moment of setup, and then we're watching the bullet explode out of the barrel and straight into Luke's gut.

There's another pause as we await to see what's happened, and then realise that it's really been done: the bullet has penetrated his supposedly unbreakable skin, almost killing him and changing the game completely.
