Marvel's The Defenders: 6 Reasons To Be Excited (And 4 To Be Worried)

4. Some Of The Quality So Far

There's a big reason everyone gets very excited about a new Netflix Marvel show, and it's not just down to the hype machine or seeing comics characters come to life (especially since most of them are B or even C-list heroes). It's because they are (usually) rather excellent.

This started with the first season of Daredevil in 2015, which completely changed the game for the superhero TV genre, and later that year it perfected the model with Jessica Jones. While they remain the benchmark for this universe and indeed all of superhero television, the quality continued throughout most of Daredevil's second season (especially the blistering Punisher mini-arc), and the majority of Luke Cage (save for the terrible decision to replace Cottonmouth with Diamondback).

There's a very dark, grown-up tone to these shows, with a focus on powerful but very flawed characters, terrifying villains, important, relatable themes and social awareness, and plenty of kick-ass action. While there's been a very negative reaction to Iron Fist, there's still a lot of hope that it's just a blip, and The Defenders (which is being overseen by Daredevil Season 2 co-showrunner Marco Ramirez solo, after Doug Petrie dropped out at the start of filming) can continue the high quality to which we were accustomed, especially in 2015.
