Marvel's The Defenders: 8 Big Questions We Need Answers To

Speaking of The Avengers, what brought Earth's Mightiest Heroes together was always going to be Nick Fury - with his idea for the Avenger Initiative set up right off the bat in Iron Man. The Defenders don't have such an obvious equivalent, though, which means we still can't predict what circumstances will unite them.

There are two big contenders for the Nick Fury role, but the most obvious is Claire Temple. Rosario Dawson's would-be Night Nurse has so far been romantically involved with both Matt Murdock and Luke Cage and is on friendly terms with Jessica. Also, an easter egg in the Luke Cage season one finale suggested she is about to befriend Colleen Wing in Iron Fist. It's not too much of a stretch to imagine she will get to know Danny Rand as well.

Still, even if she knows all of the Defenders personally, Claire isn't a tough authority figure with an agenda to save the world like Fury. Instead it's probably more likely that she will spur the heroes on to work with each other after someone else has already pitched the idea of a team-up.

The more likely contender, then, is Stick - Matt's blind martial arts mentor. Given how he is fighting an eternal war against evil ninja clan the Hand, we can imagine him letting Matt know that some big new threat is coming to New York and that he will probably need back-up this time. Then again, Stick didn't seem to be supportive of the team in the teaser trailer.
