The finale of HIMYM's first season is all about Ted's "final" attempt to get Robin. While viewers may have grown frustrated with Ted's nine year refusal to move on from her will know that this wasn't the last attempt, it is the most ambitious. In typical Ted fashion it was a grand romantic gesture, as he got a quartet in Robin's apartment playing blue instruments as a callback to their first date in the Blue Horn. However her answer to his heartfelt confession is one of indecision. Ted refuses to give up, creating rain in order to prevent her camping trip with co-anchor Sandy Rivers. It is only then that he gets what he desired and kisses her in the rain. It has been slightly dampened by future seasons but this is Ted at his most romantic and to see him get a rare pay-off in his love life is a great moment. The foreshadowing of the episode is also its strength, as Barney is severely opposed to Ted continuing to try to get Robin (it is later revealed that he has feelings for her). An even bigger foreshadowing comes in the ending's emotional swerve, as Future Ted speaks about how "in one night everything changed." Little did viewers know just how much had changed, as the jubilant Ted got back to the apartment to find Marshall sat on the front porch with Lily's engagement ring in his hand. The seemingly unbreakable couple were split by Lily suddenly running away to San Francisco just weeks before they were due to be married. Trivia Fact: Neil Patrick Harris cried at the end of the episode upon watching it for the first time.
