How I Met Your Mother: 10 Best Episodes

3. The End of the Aisle (Season 9, Episode 22)

As the show enters the final half hour of Robin and Barney's wedding, viewers finally catch up to the panic of both the bride and groom as glimpsed in the finales of previous seasons. Barney's panic is actually about getting his vows right, while it is Robin who is having doubts thanks to one more moment of thinking Ted is the logical option. Thankfully Ted shuts down her concerns and tries to show her that Barney is perfect for her. But it is only when Ted is nowhere to be found that Robin's mind is made up, as Barney confesses to her he only needs one vow, to always be honest. The wedding finally happens and Robin becomes Mrs Stinson. Meanwhile Marshall and Lily make an impromptu unofficial vow renewal, acknowledging that wedding vows don't account for people evolving and growing as personalities and so breaking the original ones is natural and unimportant. It is Barney's witnessing of this that inspires him into the honesty vow as he once again shows his admiration for the couple and how he aspires to be as good a couple as them. Ted's story was focused around how he needs to step back and remove himself from the Robin scenario for both the sake of their relationship and his own mind, something which he had originally had in mind when deciding to move to Chicago but he failed to truly stick to. The episode puts Ted in complete position ready to meet The Mother in the finale, with nothing else on his mind, and if you don't factor in the final two minutes of the finale this episode was the perfect precursor to it. Trivia Fact: The score entitled 'The Robin' plays during the episode, it first debuted in The Final Page - Part 2.
