How I Met Your Mother: 4 Ways It Could End

4. The Mother Is Dead

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9Q-rW433l0 The most obvious theory fans have discussed for years is the possibility that The Mother has passed away by 2030. Speculation around this theory grew significantly with last season's 'The Time Traveller's' where Ted gives an impassioned, imaginary speech to The Mother in the video above. What aroused suspicion of this monologue was Ted's plea of wanting an extra 45 days with The Mother and his pledge to love her "to the end of my days and beyond." This could imply something has happened to her in the future, making Ted want those extra days with her. 'Vesuvius' seemingly reinforced this theory with a moment where The Mother says to Ted in 2024 "What mother wouldn't be at her daughter's wedding?", a remark Ted had a strong emotional reaction to, hinting she will not be around for their daughter's wedding. If The Mother has passed away, it would certainly explain why Ted is telling his kids the story of how they met, especially in such a long drawn out manner. He wants them to understand their mother was one of a kind and they were meant to be together despite the short amount of time they shared. It would also explain why Ted has only referred to The Mother in the past tense. One problem with this theory, though, is how exasperated the kids are when Ted begins the story, sarcastically asking if they're being punished. If their mother passed away, wouldn't they want to know more about her and how their parents met?
