How I Met Your Mother: 7 Ways Finale Went So Wrong

7. It Made Spending A Season At The Wedding Pointless

Fans were sceptical upon the news that the entire final season would take place across the course of the wedding weekend, away from the beloved familiar scenery of MacLaren's and instead taking place at the Farhampton Inn. So Bays and Thomas had their work cut out from that moment onwards to warrant such a bold and unique decision. Sadly it wasn't done through consistent episode quality, as the final season wavered between the excellent ('Bass Player Wanted', 'The End of the Aisle') and the terrible ('Sunrise', 'Knight Vision') in the Farhampton based episodes, with many of the stronger season nine episodes taking place outside of the setting through its signature time jumping. After Barney and Robin finally tied the knot in the penultimate episode and Ted finally took a step back from the love triangle to move on to his own love life it seemed like maybe it had been worth it (maybe not a whole season though). The show even did a great job of addressing the fact that fans had been divided on their support for Barney and Robin as a couple, through the mouth of Ted no less, as they explained that love doesn't have to make sense, it just is what it is. However, the finale changed all of that. Robin and Barney were divorced within fifteen minutes of the episode (three years in the timeline) revealed through a bad comedy segment and with the closest thing to an explanation being Robin's career taking the couple around the world. As for Ted moving on, well, not quite would be an understatement. But that will be dealt with later.
