Midnight Mass Explained

9. The Dog

There are a lot of genuinely heartfelt moments in Mike Flanagan's new show which will send a tear to the eyes of the most hardened viewers. But none of these moments are as shocking or devastating than the death of Joe Collie's (Robert Longstreet) dog Pike in the second episode.

In a harrowing sequence, a weeping Joe watches on as his beloved pet dies in front of him. Poison seems to be the cause. And although nobody is brought to justice for the act, everyone on the island knows who was responsible: Bev Keane (Samantha Sloyan).

As the series progresses, Bev's over-inflated sense of self-importance and self-righteousness sees her turn into one of the show's main antagonists.

Our first introduction to her is when she complains about the dog barking at her in the street, accusing it of "snapping" at her. It's evident she hates the animal as much as she hates Joe. Moreover, she's the only character we see taking poison from the town's supplies.

Despite her insistence that the dog's death was an unfortunate accident, the implication is that she was the one who poisoned the poor pooch.

Bev is the worst, and she only gets worse from here.
