Netflix: 10 Upcoming Titles To Be Excited About From SWNAsia
4. Trese (Anime)
Based on a supernatural noir graphic novel from the Philippines, this particular series follows Trese, a black-coated woman called in by police to investigate paranormal cases alongside her masked twin bodyguards, who's responsible for keeping the peace in the supernatural community of Metro Manila, one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
One of the most iconic comics to come out of the country, largely responsible for the resurgence of Filipino comics in the 2010s, even taught as reading material in schools, Trese has a tone evocative of the Hellboy or Hellblazer series, with a distinctly Filipino edge and stark, noir elements.
Though no concept art of the series has been released as of yet, the comic itself is drawn in stark black and white by artist Kajo Baldisimo, and the long-running series and its many spin-offs are written by Budjette Tan.
The executive producer and director for this series is Jay Oliva, a stalwart of the American animation industry, having storyboarded and directed multiple shows and features, including The Legend of Korra and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Batman: Under the Red Hood, among many others. Tan has cited Tanya Yuson and Shanty Harmayn of BASE Entertainment as producers.
