Netflix's Resident Evil Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

1. It's One Of The Best Live-Action Resident Evil Adaptations

It will surely seem like damning the series with faint praise considering the overall mixed tenor of this review, but indeed, Netflix's Resident Evil is one of the franchise's most competent live-action adaptations to date.

The bar is admittedly incredibly low at this point, but beyond the extensive narrative issues, it's clear that due care has been put into the production and the cast, enough that with a stronger script this actually could've been a genuinely good show.

As it stands it's still a more impressive and ambitious take than most of the Paul W.S. Anderson movies or the recent Welcome to Raccoon City, even as it remains frustrating that Hollywood inexplicably can't seem to crack an adaptation of Resident Evil that's both faithful and worthwhile.

Hopefully if this show gets a second season, showrunner Dabb will take the inevitably vocal criticism onboard and pivot to deliver a more crowd-pleasing next volume. But as ever, it'll be entirely up to those early viewing figures as to whether or not Netflix keeps it on their books.
