As part of the show's recent Frozen arc, the character of Ingrid was born to give the story of Anna and Elsa a major threat, inspired by the very same Hans Christian Anderson story, The Snow Queen, that led to Disney's film. While it's hard not to feel the obviousness of Disney and ABC having mandated the show's inclusion of Frozen, particularly due to the fact Elsa arrived just a few months after the film's release, the series at least refrained from retelling the story of the film. Instead, it opted to continue on from where it left off, bringing Ingrid in as Anna and Elsa's powerful aunt with a chip on her shoulder and an inherent need to have a family that accepts her for who she is. Elizabeth Mitchell's innate ability to switch from steely ice queen to teary-eyed ball of emotion on a dime went a long way to helping humanise the character as the arc played out. Though her obsession managed to straddle the line between suitably creepy and somewhat relatable thanks to the revelation of her backstory, especially where Emma was concerned, her final change of heart and sacrifice to - ahem - let it go was earned, even if the deus ex machina letter from her sister that inspired her was a tad too convenient.
