Ranking Characters Of The Wire: The Streets

7. Dennis 'Cutty' Wise

Wire sofa
HBO

A rare example of the rehabilitation system actually working on the show, the former soldier for the Barksdale crew is first seen in Season Three getting out of prison after a lengthy sentence. After a brief stint working for the crew once again, Cutty realises that he just doesn't have that kind of life in him anymore and successfully exits the game.

Cutty is given great time and development showing the difficulties that ex-cons face when they reintegrate into society. Cutty finds his niche running a boxing gym for the youth of West Baltimore. With a show that is focused on the believability of its storylines that result in what is often an incredibly pessimistic worldview, Cutty's arc stands as almost inspiring in contrast and can often be uplifting on the show.

After reforming and becoming well respected in the community, Cutty forms connections with many of the boys in the community and although he struggles to break down the barriers put up by Michael Lee, he still manages to make a difference in Baltimore. Not something that can be said often.
